Inside the walls of the penitentiary, something extraordinary happens.
Men who have been told all their lives that they are lost discover that they are seen. They hear their name spoken with dignity. They step into worship and find not judgment, but grace.
There are no offering plates passed in these services. Most jobs inside the prison pay just 50¢ an hour—and there aren’t enough jobs for everyone who wants to work. Our members simply cannot sustain the ministry financially. That is why the church outside the walls has always been the heartbeat of St. Dysmas.

St. Dysmas is not contracted by the Department of Corrections.
We receive no state funding.
We are not a line item in the South Dakota Synod Mission budget.
We are not supported financially by organizations such as Lutheran Social Services or Prison Congregations of America.
The ELCA supports us spiritually and organizationally, but not financially.
The truth is simple and powerful: we exist because people like you believe in redemption.

How the Ministry
is Sustained
Two-thirds of our annual budget comes from individuals and families who give because they believe that worship matters, that hope changes lives, and that no one is beyond the reach of God’s love.The remaining one-third comes from congregations, auxiliaries, youth groups, and church organizations who partner with us in ministry.
Every dollar given makes possible the simple but life-changing work that happens inside those walls: worship services where men who once believed they were beyond forgiveness learn that grace is for them too; Bible study, discipleship, and mentoring that help rebuild identity and purpose; and volunteers who walk through the gates each week to remind the forgotten that they are not alone. Your generosity becomes the living promise that God’s grace belongs to everyone.

Visiting worship inside the walls is a powerful way to connect, offering encouragement simply by showing up.
